Health Assessment of Persian Gulf
War Veterans from Iowa
A Cooperative Agreement between the
University of Iowa, Iowa
Department of Public Health, and Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention
This study was a cross-sectional telephone interview survey comparing
the prevalence of self-reported symptoms and illnesses among military
personnel deployed to the Persian Gulf War (PGW) and military personnel
on active duty at the same time but not deployed to the Persian Gulf (non-PGW).
A total of 4886 subjects were randomly selected from a population-based
sample of military personnel from Iowa. The main outcome measures were
self-reported symptoms of medical illnesses and psychiatric conditions.
The initial results have been reported (JAMA 1997;277:238-245). Additional
data analyses, case-control, and case validation studies are currently
underway.
